Rehoming or surrendering your pet is never easy. Rehoming your pet can take weeks to months. Be patient and allow yourself the time needed to find the best home for your furry friend. Ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations. This not only keeps your pet healthy but also reassures potential adopters.
White River Humane Society would love to be in a position to say yes to everyone to help them with the hardships they may be facing. However, we have to balance our capacity and resources available at all times. Open kennels doesn't necessarily mean we are in a position to take in an animal and we have to have funding readily available to adequately care for each animal.
Remember to explore all options before deciding to surrender your pet. Even the nicest animal shelters are a stressful environment for pets. If you can rehome your pet on your own, it will reduce stress for the animal. Shelters across the nation are full and pets receive more attention in a home, than they ever would in a shelter.
If you are no longer able to take care of your dog or cat, WRHS may be able to take in your pet in an effort to find it a new home.
Owner surrendered pet evaluations are available by appointment with a member of our management team. Please note that WRHS does not guarantee we will be able to take your pet as space is limited and demand is high. Please call 812-279-2457 or email wrhsmgt@gmail.com to make an appointment for an owner surrender pet evaluation.

WRHS would love to be able to say YES to everyone that requests for us to take their pet in. We are an independent non-profit organization that has to continually fundraise to be able to operate and take care of the lost, abandoned and homeless animals. We understand that sometimes financial hardship is a factor in no longer being able to take care of your pet, however our organization also has bills to cover to be in a position to take care of these pets.
Pet owners who have been faced with life circumstances where they can no longer care for their pet may also be in a situation where they are unable to cover the pet surrender fee. Please consider donating to our Pet Intake Fund to help provide care to pets in need.
We rely on donations to keep our operation running in support of the lost, abandoned, neglected and homeless dogs & cats of Lawrence County, Indiana.
